Job description
The University of Stavanger invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant Professor in Innovation and Regional Studies at the Department of Innovation, Management and Marketing. The position is vacant from 1 January 2020.

The objective of the position is to strengthen the department's research and teaching in innovation and regional studies, and to give researchers holding a doctoral degree within relevant academic fields the opportunity for further qualification towards a leading position in academia.

The subject area for the position is innovation and regional studies. Research areas of interest include regional innovation and economic restructuring, innovation policy and innovation networks.

The duties will be carried out at the University of Stavanger. The employee will conduct and disseminate research in innovation and regional studies, teach and supervise students, as well as contribute to the development of partnerships with external stakeholders. Development and use of digital and diverse learning methods, innovation and value creation based on results from research, and academic development work will be included in the position. The employee is expected to contribute to scholarly debates at the faculty and across the university, as well as in external fora.

Tenure track

An Assistant Professor in a tenure-track position is employed for a period of seven years with the main objective to qualify for employment as tenured Associate Professor, based on the qualifications achieved during the tenure period. A mid-term review will be conducted after a three-year period and final evaluation at the end of the tenure period. Possibilities for permanent employment are given on the basis of the final evaluation. A condition for employment is that you have not previously been employed for more than one year in a regular postdoctoral position in Norway or at a foreign institution.


Qualification requirements

For employment, a doctorate is required in a field that is relevant to innovation and regional studies. No more than five years may have passed since the sissertation defense, allowing for any parental leave.

Applicants must posess a doctoral degree in a subject area relevant for research on innovation and regional studies at the time of employment. No more than five years may have passed since the dissertation defense, allowing for any parental leave.

You must also have:

  • A strong research background in the field of innovation and regional studies
  • The ability and desire to conduct high quality research
  • The capabilities and motivation to publish in top-tier journals in relevant disciplines
  • Ability and willingness to teach master’s level courses related to the field of innovation and regional studies

Applicants which do not already have pedagogical and didactic qualifications relating to higher education must be willing to complete a university pedagogy course within a period of two years of appointment. The course will be provided by the university.

Furthermore, it is important that you have:

  • Ability to involve and engage students in teaching, where the course objectives, content and assessments are closely interlinked
  • Interest in the development of varied learning methods and digital tools in teaching
  • Research results published in recognized scientific journals
  • Ability to initiate, obtain external funding for, drive forward and carry out research and development projects
  • Ability to build and nurture networks – regionally, nationally and internationally
  • Experience in communicating research to relevant stakeholders
  • Ability to manage a heavy workload, Inquisitiveness and motivation to develop new knowledge in collaboration with others
  • Good teamwork and communication skills, and ability to contribute to a constructive working environment

The working and teaching languages are Norwegian and English. You must demonstrate good command of both oral and written English at the start of the appointment. If you do not have good command of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language, you are required to acquire Norwegian language skills equivalent to level B2 within a period of two years of the appointment start date. If required, you will be offered a Norwegian language course paid for by the university.

General information
Your application will be assessed by an expert committee. In the expert assessment, emphasis will be placed on submitted scientific works/documented artistic activity, and documented teaching competence. The committee will also assess your experience with popularization/dissemination activities, participation in university administration, and any other documented qualifications relevant to the position.

If a large number of applications is received, it may be necessary to reject some applications before the associated documents are sent to the expert committee for assessment. This will apply to applicants who do not satisfy key qualification requirements.

Based on the expert committee's statement, unless already completed, relevant applicants will be invited for an interview and a presentation/trial lecture before any recommendations are made.

The university aims to recruit more women into assistant professor positions; thus, if several applicants are considered to have equal qualifications, a woman will be given priority.

It is a prerequisite that the appointee obtains a residence which enables him or her to be present at/available to the academic community during ordinary working hours.

The position has been announced in both Norwegian and English. In the case of differences of meaning between the texts, the Norwegian text takes precedence.
