Job description

‘The Business of Women's Words: Purpose and Profit in Feminist Publishing’

The School of Media Film and Music is pleased to offer a 1 year, full-time Research Fellowship to work on this project. Funded by the Leverhulme Trust and supported by the British Library, work will be supervised by Dr Margaretta Jolly (project PI) and Dr Lucy Delap at the University of Cambridge (project CI).

The fellowship will contribute to the project’s aim to establish the history of feminist entrepreneurship in the cultural and creative industries. It will achieve this through:

  • Working with digital labs colleagues and web developers at Sussex and the British Library to develop an innovative digital map of the feminist magazine Spare Rib to reveal the geography and shape of feminist enterprise, activism and leisure.
  • Supporting project analyses of the commercial aspects of women’s movement activism in the context of feminist cultural and creative publishing initiatives since the 1970s.
  • Supporting project outreach and engagement including with The British Library, businesses and community education projects.

Working for this project will require familiarity with publishing history, cultural and creative industry perspectives, feminist/women’s social movements, twentieth century UK political, social and cultural history or geography, and experience of working with maps.

Some travel within the UK will be involved including attending meetings at the University of Cambridge, but most research will be conducted in either London or at the University of Sussex.

You will have a PhD related to the research project (i.e. publishing history, cultural and creative industry perspectives and/or ethical business, feminist/women’s social movements and/or digital mapping skills).

You must be digitally literate, have archival or mapping experience, and be able to demonstrate a developing record of research.

The advert will be closed early if sufficient numbers apply.

The University of Sussex values the diversity of its staff and students and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
