Role Description

Department

Understanding the creative industries forms an important part of the University of York’s Creativity research theme. This area of work has received major investments including from UK funding bodies such as the AHRC, EPSRC, Innovate UK, Research England, and the University itself. The programme of work also involves collaborative partnerships with a range of industry stakeholders.


The latest project, Creative Media Research and Knowledge Exchange Hub (Creat:KE), is an exciting new 3-year research project led by the University of York. The aim is to enhance Yorkshire and the Humber’s screen-related industries (film, television, games, XR and other digital media) through a collaborative industry and higher education partnership focusing on diversity and inclusion; knowledge exchange; skills and training; and research about the development of the creative industries.


This post will contribute to the research strand of Creat:KE and will involve working collaboratively across the University of York and with  partners in the region to generate new knowledge and bring together existing research about creative work and the screen industries, that will be of benefit to people working in the sector.


Role

The role of the Research Associate will be to undertake research which: supports the needs of the region’s screen-related industries; enhances Creat:KE’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, knowledge exchange and skills development; and advances our understanding of the creative industries. This will be achieved by undertaking primary and secondary research, synthesising existing scholarship, identifying best practice and working with partner universities to identify research needs. You will support the delivery of research commissioning activity including theme identification, funding call design and evaluation of research proposals.


You will also undertake the writing up of research results and dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations and public engagement and outreach activities


A critical understanding of the creative industries will be key in this role and the post would suit someone with a background in business and management studies, human geography, sociology, film and TV studies, or similar disciplines.   

                    

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • You should have a PhD, or equivalent research experience, in or related to the creative industries. 
  • Research expertise in an area that will complement and enhance Creat:KE’s aims and objectives.
  • Knowledge of a range of social science research techniques and methodologies enabling you to undertake independent and collaborative research to understand issues such as diversity and inclusion; knowledge exchange; skills, training and development; as well as contributing to understanding the economic development of the creative industries.
  • The ability to present and write work for a range of academic and non-academic audiences, including at conferences, in reports, and for academic journal articles.
  • The ability to develop research ideas, projects and proposals for your own and joint research, with the assistance of a mentor if required.
  • Personal attributes which mean you can work well as part of a community made up of academics, policymakers and practitioners.

The role is available for the three-year lifetime of the project which begins in February 2020.
