Research Assistant/Associate in Business
University of Cambridge
United Kingdom

The University of Cambridge wishes to appoint a Research Fellow (Research Associate or Research Assistant) at the Centre for Business Research, to work on a project involving statistical analysis of the CBR Leximetric Datasets and other relevant datasets, including rule of law indices, in connection with the rise of populism in Europe.

The CBR Datasets provide a unique time series, tracking changes in labour, company and insolvency law over the period since the 1970s, for a large sample of countries. The coding of legal data is carried out using a so-called leximetric methodology developed in the CBR. See https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/256566. The post-holder will work with members of the CBR to develop and apply statistical techniques for analysing the datasets and related datasets on democracy and the rule of law. The research will explore the causes and consequences of the rise of populism in Europe and its consequences for the economy, democracy, and the rule of law.

Funding for the post has been made available via the NORFACE programme, through its support for the POPBACK research project, grant no 462-19-080 (https://www.popback.org.)

The successful applicant will have completed an M.Phil. or have equivalent advanced research experience, including doctoral level research, in a quantitative social science, computer science, or digital humanities discipline. Familiarity with time series and panel data econometrics and/or machine learning methods will be essential.

The post-holder should be committed to delivering high quality research outputs and be capable of exercising initiative and demonstrating good time management and planning skills. They should have an interest in the role of institutions in social and economic change and in the methodology of applied social science research.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience). An applicant who has submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded.

The salary will be in the range £27,929 - £32,348 at Research Assistant level and in the range £34,308 - £42,155 at Research Associate level.

Further information on the post may be found in the Further Particulars document attached to this vacancy. Informal enquiries can be made to Simon Deakin (s.deakin@cbr.cam.ac.uk).

The first three months of the post will be probationary.

The post holder will be located at the Centre for Business Research in central Cambridge.

Please include details of two referees in your application, one of whom must be your most recent supervisor and/or line manager.
