Description

UCSB Crossroads Project Coordinator (Academic Coordinator I)

UCSB Crossroads (http://www.graddiv.ucsb.edu/financial/crossroads) is an innovative model of interdisciplinary graduate education in which faculty and graduate students from multiple disciplines conduct a yearlong research project and translate that experience of interdisciplinary research into pedagogy in the undergraduate classroom. Run by the Graduate Division, it engages faculty and doctoral students from across the UCSB campus. We have obtained funding to develop training and mentoring programs to address challenges identified during the pilot phase of the project, and to assess the educational effectiveness of the model.

We seek a project coordinator with the primary responsibility to document and disseminate pedagogical workshops and exercises for facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration, research, and teaching, which were developed in the context of UCSB Crossroads. The project coordinator will work with senior personnel who developed and conducted these exercises and make the materials accessible to other individuals who might be interested in applying them in their own interdisciplinary projects and in other academic institutions. Duties will include the development of web content that makes these materials publicly available. The latter work will be done in collaboration with a group of faculty and other senior personnel from across the natural and social sciences, as well as Ph.D. staff working in Instructional Development, professional development, and assessment. The project coordinator will report directly to the Associate Dean of the Graduate Division.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Document existing workshop materials to make them accessible to individuals broadly interested in interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Develop web content that makes these materials publicly available
  • Document activities and achievements of current and former Crossroads projects on a public website
  • Organize and coordinate campus workshop on the Crossroads program
  • Assist with writing project reports to the NSF
  • Assist the project Assessor with logistics, data collection, and analysis
  • Assist with academic and outreach publications describing the program and assessment results

Basic Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree or at least two years of graduate study in learning or communication sciences (e.g., Education, Psychology, Communication, Writing Studies) or a related discipline.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Understanding of research- and theory-based approaches to disciplinarity and teaching
  • Outstanding organizational, presentation, writing, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience in developing curricular materials
  • Experience working both independently and as part of a team
  • Experience in project coordination and/or administration
  • Experience in web-based communication
  • Experience teaching at the university level
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in one or more of the following:
    • Interdisciplinary research and education
    • Graduate education
    • Science communication
    • Educational assessment

The Graduate Division facilitates and coordinates graduate education and student services for all graduate programs at UCSB. Its goals are to promote academic excellence in graduate degree programs, to foster a diverse and inclusive graduate community of domestic and international students, and to cultivate an intellectually challenging environment and a socially supportive climate. The Division is interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service.

UC Santa Barbara, a member of the Association of American Universities, is an internationally recognized center for teaching and research, distinguished by its interdisciplinary programs and a commitment to innovation. UCSB enrolls over 25,000 undergraduate and graduate students and has a faculty of nearly 1000 that includes six Nobel laureates, 113 members of the National Academies, and notable faculty in every discipline.

Salary and Benefits: Academic Coordinator I, with a salary step commensurate with qualifications. 50% time appointment for six months from the start date, with possible extension contingent upon performance and funding. The start date is negotiable, but ideally would be on or before January 6, 2020. Full benefits package included.
