The University is looking for an outstanding Professor of Industrial Statistics with an established reputation in industrial statistics and statistical engineering. The Professor will contribute to research and education in this new area in Business Analytics, which will contribute to solving large, complex and unstructured problems.

Job description

ABS’s mission is to prepare its graduates for the future, implying that all education and research programmes should teach students both the traditional knowledge and skills taught at B-schools as well as more technical knowledge and skills (e.g. AI). This is one of the reasons ABS wants to continue in and further expand Industrial Statistics at the Operations Management Section.

UvA seeks to appoint an outstanding scholar with an international research record in industrial statistics and statistical engineering, a new area which will contribute in solving large, complex and unstructured problems. In ABS this is referred to as Business Analytics. Ideally, the candidate would also have experience collaborating on research projects with industry and experience in executive teaching. The new Professor can participate in Amsterdam Data Science and the Tinbergen Institute.

The appointee will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • executing research and developing new research lines;
  • PhD supervision;
  • teaching at Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD level;
  • executive teaching;
  • a leadership role in the Department.



The ideal candidate has a strong background in industrial statistics and statistical engineering, and will be co-responsible for the research programme in the Operations Management Section of ABS.

The appointee should frequently publish in international top journals, including Journal of American Statistical Association, Technometrics, Journal of Quality Technology, and IIE Transactions. Having experience in joint research collaborations with industry is a strong pre.


The ideal candidate should have strong experience and good student evaluations in teaching industrial statistics and quantitative operations at Bachelor, Master’s and PhD level. Experience in executive teaching will be a strong advantage. Enthusiasm for and experience with innovative teaching methods will be warmly welcomed.


The ideal candidate should be currently employed as an Associate or Full professor at a reputable international business school or University. S/he should play a leadership role in the development of new research areas and educational programs.


The appointee should have the following skills:

  • strong research skills;
  • strong teaching skills;
  • team worker with good communications skills (English required);
  • ability to play a pivotal role in the further development of joint collaborations with multiple stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience

The appointee should have the following qualifications and experience:

  • PhD in statistics or a closely related field;
  • publications in leading international journals;
  • evidence of international leadership in her/his research field;
  • excellent teaching evaluations;
  • experience in the successful supervision of PhD students;
  • some experience at the design and implementation of new courses;
  • experience in obtaining external research funding;
  • team player with good communication skills;
  • open to work with the industry;
  • open to innovative and multi-disciplinary research;
  • fluent in English.


The appointment will be permanent. Both full-time and part-time appointments are possible. In certain cases, however, different terms of employment may be offered. The salary, depending on relevant experience before the beginning of the employment contract, will be €5,582 and €9,812 gross per month, based on full-time employment (38 hours a week). These amounts are exclusive 8 % holiday allowance and 8,3 end-of-year bonus. A favorable tax agreement, the ‘30% ruling’, may apply to non-Dutch applicants.  The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (Cao NU) applies. In certain cases, however, different terms of employment may be offered.
