Job summary

Imperial College Business School’s Department of Finance is seeking to appoint a Principal Teaching Fellow with teaching experience, demonstrable teaching excellence and evidence of administrative capacity. They should be an expert in the field of Finance and should have the ability to teach their subject to non-specialists as well as specialists at the postgraduate level. 

You will report to the Head of Department and will undertake teaching Finance activities across the Business Schools suite of postgraduate and undergraduate programmes. You will be responsible for developing their own materials, teaching delivery and both setting and assessing work including examinations and coursework.

You will be expected to support and develop teaching in the Business School, both through degree programmes and executive education. They will also be expected to contribute to the administration of the Business School, to participate in the internal life of the School, and to enhance its reputation for pedagogy.

Duties and responsibilities

Tutoring, learning facilitation and teaching

  • Be responsible for major areas of teaching activity within either Faculty or College. Support others in the effective use of appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods. Apply knowledge acquired from scholarship to own teaching practice.
  • Contribute to the efficient management and administration of the Faculty or College by performing administrative duties as allocated and by taking on appropriate positions of responsibility.
  • To undertake teaching, including lectures and academic tutorials, using appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods.
  • Develop own teaching materials, methods and approaches, applying innovative and appropriate techniques. Be responsible for the design and delivery of teaching material and the assessment of teaching activities.
  • To set and assess the work (including examinations and coursework) and progress of students using appropriate methods and criteria. To provide constructive and timely feedback on essays and course assessments. Use innovative approaches to providing feedback.
  • To supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student projects within Finance subject areas
  • Provide strategic leadership in curriculum design and delivery across a range of programmes of study at various levels, in a way which is consistent with the aims of the Learning and Teaching Strategy. Use an evidence-based approach to develop suitable strategies where areas of current provision are identified as in need of revision or improvement.
  • Identify areas of particular student need or interest
  • Identify best practice and communicate to the Academic Director
  • Participate in module meetings and exam boards with Academic Directors and Programme Teams
  • Have potential for and willingness to work towards appropriate professional recognition and accreditation e.g. Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Educational Research

  • Lead on the activities of evaluation, critical enquiry and educational research
  • To collaborate in the activities of evaluation and critical enquiry contributing to educational research
  • Engage in scholarly activities related to subject area and higher education practice.
  • Remain professional in practice and maintain knowledge in own specialist area

Administration and other activities

  • To participate in and develop activities such as student recruitment, student placements and outreach work
  • To manage and develop teams and staff involved in teaching e.g., teaching fellows, technicians or administrators.
  • Lead training and development for other staff, and shape provision
  • To participate in committees and working groups within the department and College as required
  • To undertake duties related to course administration, including organisation of teaching activities, attendance records, Health & Safety matters
  • Be a reflective, responsive practitioner committed to personal and professional development and the development of your own teaching and learning skills.
  • To undertake internal learning and development training as relevant to role
  • To undertake specific departmental roles as may be required.

Essential requirements

    • MSc or PhD in Finance or related fields (possibly Economics, Operations, Teaching and learning support experience.
    • Experience in using various teaching methods and techniques within the relevant discipline.
    • Experience of producing clear and concise written material for teaching and management purposes.
    • Recognised qualification in Higher Education learning and teaching (or nearing completion), or relevant experience
    • Experience in using various teaching methods and techniques within the relevant discipline.

    • Knowledge of teaching and learning tools and techniques
    • Knowledge of learning approaches and styles
    • Strong teaching and communication skills
    • Skilled in working as part of a team
    • Ability to work independently and in self-motivated way
    • A passion for MBA/MSc level finance education
    • Organisation skills and timeliness
    • Strong quantitative and/or analytical skills (subject to module type)
    • A keen ability in bringing practice-based examples into the virtual classroom
    • Appropriate subject and teaching expertise that it is frequently updated through ongoing review by line manager/supervisor e.g. against job descriptions and set work standards.
    • Contribution to design of appropriate teaching materials.
    • Quality of teaching or learning technology e.g. through feedback from colleagues.
    • Optimal utilisation of resources e.g. efficient use of time, materials, etc.

The College is currently trialling a Work Location Framework until early 2023.  Hybrid working may be considered for this role and the role holder may be expected to work 60% or more of their time onsite, with 40% the minimum time spent onsite.  The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
