At the Department of Economic History and International Relations research and education are conducted within the areas of Economic History and International Relations. The department has around 60 employees, consisting of teachers, researchers and administrative staff.

Economic history is at its core interested in how human and societal financing and resource allocation develops over time. Within economic history different aspects of economic growth, monetary and financial conditions, labour, reproduction, gender division of labour and the use of natural resources during different historical eras are studied. We are characterized by our pluralistic approach toward the use of theory and methods. 

Project description

The position will be associated with the project Banking Before Banks: Networks, Behaviour and Strategies in Early Financial Markets financed from the Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Memorial Fund and supervised by associate professor Elise Dermineur Reuterswärd.

In pre-industrial Europe, networks were at the center of social, and above all, economic life. This is especially true for early financial markets. Before the mid-nineteenth century and the proliferation of banks, most financial transactions took place through inner circles (i.e. informal networks). This research project analyses the economic strategies and behaviour of men and women in early financial networks through social network analysis. The aim of this project is to understand how early financial networks formed and worked, and how people behaved in such networks.

Main responsibilities

We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow with a strong background in financial history, especially with a focus on Italian early financial markets.The position involved research in the MAW project Banking Before Banks: Networks, Behaviour and Strategies in Early Financial Markets. Therefore the researcher will be responsible for conducting research on Italian early financial networks, especially the Florentine Catasto of 1427. Part of the assignment is to digitalize, transcribe and code parts of the Catasto with special reference to the extensive lists of creditors and debtors. The main assignment will be the production of several scholarly articles.

Qualification requirements

Postdoctoral positions are appointed primarily for purposes of research. Applicants are expected to hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent degree from another country.

Assessment criteria

The degree should have been completed no more than three years before the deadline for applications. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances, which may involve sick leave, parental leave, clinical attachment, elected positions in trade unions, or similar.

In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills and that the successful candidate should be highly motivated and have a Ph.D. in economic history/history or related field, and knowledge of early financial markets. A strong command of paleography is necessary. In addition, the successful candidate needs to be fluent in both Italian and English. In the appointment process, special attention will be given to research skills and productivity.

The work is done in teams, so it is important that you can collaborate well and are able to take initiatives. The work is done in an international environment, therefore great importance is attached to communicative ability.

Terms of employment

The position involves full-time employment for a maximum of two years, with the possibility of extension under special circumstances. Start date 2020-01-01 or as per agreement.
