Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 10713

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a dynamic and experienced communications or marketing professional who is passionate about using science and technology to support the ongoing national energy transition in response to global climate change. A particular area of focus will be on the nexus between energy and industry, and how applied science and technology can ensure the U.S. industry remains at the forefront of clean, efficient manufacturing.

The Program Communications Specialist will support the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF) Consortium within the Manufacturing Sciences Division (MSD) by developing strategies and products that communicate MDF research, technical advances, and scientific leadership across a range of technologies funded by the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The primary purpose of this position is to produce impactful and professional strategic communications products for the MDF Consortium. The position will aid in developing a vision for communications and a strategy for ensuring excellent technical and scientific research is communicated and understood by a broad range of audiences. The program communications specialist will develop products that tell the compelling story of clean energy research across the program, working closely with ORNL’s AMMTO program manager and the MDF Director to prioritize tasks and deliver a range of communications products that showcase groundbreaking science.

Specifically, the program communications specialist will:

  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with AMMTO program manager and MDF Director and communication contacts at DOE, interacting with stakeholders regularly to identify needs and ensure alignment of communications products with program goals.
  • Develop a tiered communications strategy with AMMTO program manager and MDF Director to reach the most important audiences while highlighting program research, the projects and achievements most relevant to those audiences, and the best strategies and tactics for building support and engaging audiences—including key messages, effective messengers, and selection of the best-suited communications products and platforms.
  • Use state-of-the-art approaches and tools to build a strong presence and reputation for ORNL programs with key audiences across government, industry, research communities, and the public.
  • Be able to understand and write about complex science- and technology-related topics and work with senior scientists and managers to produce interesting and compelling science and technology communications products that readily convey the importance of the work at ORNL to multiple audiences, including DOE, congressional staffers, scientifically trained researchers and sponsors, industry partners, and the public.
  • Write science highlights, feature articles, website and social media content, newsletter content, news releases, promotional pieces, presentation materials (PowerPoint slides, posters, banners, etc.), fact sheet content, talking points, exhibits, video scripts, and other materials that clearly and effectively communicate research findings, technical developments, programmatic direction, key programming messages, and other news and information.
  • Identify and showcase cross-cutting research that highlights ORNL’s unique strength in interdisciplinary research.
  • Prepare, edit, maintain, and archive project documents, reports, and other written material. Edit materials for content, consistency, clarity, grammar, and syntax to ensure compliance with customer requirements and ORNL, sponsor, or publisher guidelines.
  • Organize information from various scientific and often highly technical sources, including interviews with subject matter experts, and produce written materials in clear, concise language without loss of technical meaning and with meticulous attention to logic, consistency, and accuracy.
  • Suggest visual and digital material in support of scientific and promotional information needs. Work with graphic designers, photographers, and videographers to develop attractive and high-visual-impact products.
  • Work cooperatively with management and peers in Communications to provide high-quality, cost-effective support for the lab.
  • Provide guidance to ensure organizations’ websites, newsletters and other publications, social media accounts, electronic signage, and promotional materials are effectively managed through to completion.
  • Develop strong working relationships with researchers to identify ideas for content. Consult with customers on formats (both print and electronic) and methods that will most effectively communicate with the intended audience.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute special events, community outreach, and other programs, including development of related communications products and publications. Provide onsite support for events, workshops, and conferences as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.
  • Maintain a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
  • Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success
