The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry is located on the Viikki campus. The mission of the faculty is to promote the sustainable use of renewable natural resources through scientific research and research-based teaching. We focus on agricultural and forest sciences, food and nutrition, microbiology, as well as on economics and management. We cover the full natural resource chain from farm to fork, the entire field of forest sciences from soil chemistry to marketing, as well as the environmental effects of related activities. Graduates from the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry are versatile experts in biosciences and business, able to meet the needs of both the business sector and society at large.


The Department of Economics and Management conducts high-quality research and teaching, involving the application of economics, management, marketing and consumption theory, methods and perspectives to address issues associated with the goods and services from our terrestrial and aquatic environments: agricultural areas, food systems, forests and aquatic environments. The department has several international research groups. The department hosts the M.Sc. programme “Agricultural, Environmental and Resource Economics” and the M.Sc. programme “Food economy and consumption (website in Finnish)” and the B.Sc. programme “Environmental and Food Economics”. Our researchers also participate in the teaching and development of doctoral programmes. The Department is also a part of Helsinki Graduate School of Economics (HGSE).


The Department of Economics and Management of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry invites applications for the position of

University Lecturer in Sustainable Entrepreneurship

from 1 August 2020 onward or as agreed.


Focus areas of the position: We are interested in recruiting a scholar whose expertise lies at the intersection of entrepreneurship and the different dimensions of sustainability. More specifically, the key areas are:

- Entrepreneurship as part of economic, societal and ecological processes
- Change and continuity created by entrepreneurship
- Entrepreneurial actors, practices, and structures in relation to sustainability
- New challenges and possibilities of rural entrepreneurship
- The interplay between enterprise, rural, social, and environmental politics and related steering mechanisms.
- Profitability of SMEs


The appointee will have a strong interest to work in interdisciplinary teams, and with stakeholders from private, public and third sectors.



The duties of the University Lecturer include (i.) teaching (including the supervision of theses) at bachelor and master level, in areas at the intersection of entrepreneurship and sustainability, with applications to agriculture and food, (ii.) research in these areas, and (iii.) administrative tasks. All duties require language competences in both Finnish and English. In order to successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee shall ideally not only have experience in teaching, theses supervision and administration, but also be active in terms of academic research. Success in attracting research grants and/or industry-sponsored projects, and possession of a relevant international networks is an asset.


According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, holders of university lectureships are required to possess an applicable doctoral degree, to have the ability to provide high quality research-based teaching, and to supervise theses and dissertations.


To successfully attend to the duties of the position, appointees must have excellent English language skills. According to the University Decree, university lecturers must also be fluent in the Finnish language. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in the Finnish or Swedish language may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. Although the languages of instruction are English and Finnish, applicants without Finnish language competence are warmly encouraged to apply. It is however, expected that the recruited person will acquire Finnish language skills to teach courses and perform administrative duties within three years from her/his appointment.

Your work will be supported by the research and teaching staff of the department and the faculty as well as the administrative and technical staff at Viikki campus.

The salary will be based on levels 5-7 of the requirements level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. There is a four-months trial period for the position.
