School of Design

The School of Design is a new School comprising the disciplines of Industrial Design, Digital Design (including Animation & Interactive Media) and Communication Design.

The School builds on RMIT’s leading national and international reputation in design education by creating a specific focus on emerging areas such as UX and service design, design strategy and virtual and augmented reality.

It comprises approximately 72 academic and 10 professional staff and over 2000 EFT undergraduate and postgraduate students with expectations of growth.

About You and the Role

You will responsible:

  • Conduct teaching activities within undergraduate program, Bachelor of Design (Communication Design), but may also be required to teach within the Communication Design postgraduate programs;
  • Work independently contributing to efficient delivery of lectures, tutorials, practical classes and demonstrations through forward-thinking, sustainable and engaging course material for students as well as including: managing individual projects within timelines and budgets and ensuring compliance with quality and reporting requirements; publishing research results in high quality outlets as lead or co-author; preparing and submitting external research funding applications; and supervising higher degree by research candidates;
  • Involvement in varied administrative duties based on the level of appointment Conduct research/scholarly activities under limited supervision both independently or as a member of a team, including: managing individual projects within timelines and budgets and ensuring compliance with quality and reporting requirements; publishing research results in high quality outlets as lead or co-author; preparing and submitting external research funding applications; and supervising higher degree by research candidates.
  • Participate and develop relationships with relevant departments of universities and other institutions and actively promote the program by establishing and maintaining memberships, links and partnerships with academic, industry and professional communities.

You will have:

  • Experience in preparing high-quality curriculum and course materials at tertiary level for undergraduate and postgraduate programs which includes online delivery;
  • Possess the capability to undertake high quality research evidenced by excellent track record in publishing quality research output in high impact journals and contributing to the Discipline and School research initiatives, external research funding submissions and strong linkage to industry and government;
  • Commitment to perform academic administrative and to deliver full academic responsibilities relating to the coordination of an award program, year or course;
  • Experience in supervising higher degree by research candidates is desirable;
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) with the passion for teamwork and multidisciplinary collaboration.


Mandatory: PhD or equivalent in relevant field coupled with research record.

In order to be eligible for this ECDF role you will have performed casual teaching work for an Australian University during the past three years and have not been employed on a continuing basis at an Australian University.

Desirable: Candidate with expertise in Human-centred Design, Service Design, UX Design and/or Information/Interaction/Experience Design would be an advantage.

Preferred: Completion of the Essentials of Learning and Teaching (login required) or possess (or eligible to apply for) appropriate HEA fellowship (if the appointed candidate does not meet this requirement at time of appointment, they will be supported to complete this as a requirement to fulfil their probation).

Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children check.
