Cognition and communication at the department

The department conducts a broad research with an interest in human interaction and communication with relation to society's digitalization and social and cognitive conditions, at the individual, group and organizational level.

Research in Division of Cognition and Communication in the field of communication is primarily focused on organizational, intercultural and digital communication. The research in cognitive science links AI with machine learning and modeling of human cognition, emotion theory and multimodal interaction, with possible applications e.g. in decision support and autonomous systems.

All teaching at the department's program Master in Communication and the bachelor program in Cognitive Science reflects the strong research environment.

In both research and education, the department has a long tradition of working closely with industry and the public sector. The department hosts ICED Lab and is active in various collaborative projects on, among other things, Artificial Intelligence.

Subject area description

The topic of communication is focused on understanding various forms of communication in various contexts. Communication is an interdisciplinary area at the intersection of social sciences, humanities and technology. Organizational communication, intercultural communication as well as consequences in terms of challenges and opportunities that result from the accelerating spread of information and communication technology in various contexts are important areas in our research and education.

Job assignments

As a lecturer, you are expected to:

  • Teach courses in the Master in Communication program (which is taught entirely in English).
  • Prepare and deliver entire courses or parts of courses and be able to take on course responsibilities.
  • Grade examination assignments.
  • Supervise or assist in supervising master's theses.
  • Support coordination of courses within the framework of the Master in Communication.
  • Undertake administrative tasks.


Eligible to be hired as a lecturer is the one who, partly, has shown pedagogical skills, and partly has undergone university education at advanced level as the lowest or has equivalent competence or any other skill that is relevant with regard to the subject content of the employment and the duties to be included in the employment.


Applicants should have a master's or magister degree (or a degree considered equivalent by the employer) in communication or a related discipline.

Documented experience of successful teaching is a merit. The competence to teach to teach in the areas of interpersonal communication and pragmatics, an ability to teach theories and methods in the field of communication, as well as documented experience of successful supervision are particularly meritorious for this post. Other areas that are also considered meritorious to be able to teach in are: Intercultural communication, leadership and organizational communication, digital communication including digital literacies, computer mediated communication including social media, multimodal communication and rhetorics.

Assessment of pedagogical skills includes planning, implementation, evaluation, supervision and examination. The pedagogical skill must be well documented so that the quality can also be assessed. When assessing pedagogical skills, special emphasis is placed on pedagogical experience of relevance to the position. The educational skill should therefore be primarily linked to the program's course offerings. Formal training in higher education teaching is considered a merit.

Applicants should master English fluently as teaching and seminars are usually conducted with English spoken and written language.

The university will carry out a holistic assessment of aptitude and skills of candidates in this recruitment process and select the applicant who is deemed to have the best pre-requisites for fulfilling the duties involved in the position, for collaborating with other staff and for contributing to a positive development of the division.


Form of employment: The position is a general fixed-term employment (allmän visstidsanställning).
Scope: 100%, fulltime
Period: 1st of May 2020 or according to agreement, until 30th of June 2021
Placement: The department of Applied Information Technology, The Division of Cognition and Communication
The possibility of shortening the period of employment and/or working at a lower scope can be discussed during the interview.
