The Opportunity

The RTA School of Media in the Faculty of Communication and Design at is pleased to invite applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of media audiences and audience research with a focus on computational approaches to data analytics, AI, machine learning and other relevant audience research digital tools. The appointment shall be effective July 1, 2020, subject to final budgetary approval. 

Established in 1953 as the School of Radio & Television Arts, the RTA School of Media is a creative innovation hub of broadcasting, media, transmedia, gaming, interactive design and hybrid mobile production. For the past two years, RTA has been recognized by Hollywood Reporter magazine as one of the world’s top 15 media production schools. It offers three academically rigorous undergraduate programs in media production, new media and sports media, as well as a graduate program in media production. RTA attracts and nurtures innovative, creative, and entrepreneurial students. Its faculty is a diverse mix of highly regarded creative practitioners, innovators, and researchers, all committed to the education of tomorrow’s industry leaders, thinkers, artists, storytellers and scholars. The faculty prides itself on the excellence of its production practice, research and on the quality of its teaching. 

Research and creative areas range from critical media theory and media production to experiential media, transmedia, interaction design and media entrepreneurship. We are interested in candidates that will contribute to our existing research and teaching strengths by bringing innovative and diverse perspectives and experiences to the school.

This position falls under the jurisdiction of the Ryerson Faculty Association (RFA) ().

The successful candidate will engage in a combination of teaching, research and service duties.The candidate will be expected to pursue an innovative and independent research program and/or creative practice that is externally funded and produces high quality research and/or creative activity in the field. The candidate will contribute to our undergraduate and graduate programs through teaching, mentoring and supervision of students, and participate in the administrative activities of the school. The candidate will participate in maintaining an inclusive, equitable, and collegial environment.


Candidates must hold an earned Ph.D. in Communications, Media Studies, Data Science, or a related field. Professional experience in the field as an audience researcher is highly desirable.

The successful candidate must present evidence of:

  • broad knowledge of audience and reception studies and ability to address the social, cultural, and economic dimensions of media audiences with a focus on television, radio, podcasting, video games, and social media; 
  • knowledge of traditional and contemporary audience research practices as they apply to the media industries; 
  • expert understanding of the use of analytics, AI and computational approaches to audience analysis, content creation, and other applications involving audiences and markets in television and/or interactive media combined with the ability to teach courses in these areas; 
  • expert  knowledge of audience analytics and market research, including current issues, methodologies, best practices, and industry challenges;
  • practical understanding of how to collect, analyze, and model data relating to media audiences and media markets;
  • understanding of media production processes and the impact of data and AI on storytelling and content creation;
  • a proven capacity to synthesize and critically reflect on audience and media market trends and issues and explain how they influence media production practices and trends;
  • an accomplished professional background in audience research for media industries, with experience in professional and cross-platform audience research and/or audience analytics; 
  • a prior track record of teaching excellence at the university or college level, or, delivery of exceptional professional training in the area of analytics or artificial intelligence; 
  • a demonstrated capacity to produce and publish dynamic, high quality research in the area of audiences, media markets, data analytics, or AI, which possesses the potential to influence peers worldwide, public policy and industry practice and attract external funding; 
  • a commitment to student wellbeing and to making learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population, and to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of the job; and
  • understanding of and ability to contribute to  collegial governance and faculty service.
