The Dean of Instruction will motivate instructional personnel to ensure that each Geffen Academy student receives an education that is goal focused, rigorous, and balanced so that high expectations and humane practices that promote student wellness and social-emotional growth are evident and valued. Further, the Dean of Instruction sets the direction for the instructional framework and pedagogical approach to Geffen Academy’s academic programs while working collaboratively with school leaders, teachers, and students to spark joy in teaching and learning so that all students succeed. Essential Duties: 1. Instruction Leadership • Lead academic service areas (i.e., instructional improvement, curriculum and instruction, professional development, etc.) and student support services that are focused on both academic mastery and growth of knowledge and skills as well as social and emotional growth and development. • Apply research-based and best practices in academics and ethical leadership to ensure consistent delivery of high-quality instruction across a 6-12 continuum. • Ensure teachers can differentiate instruction and empower all students to be self-directed, independent learners. • Regularly analyze quantitative and qualitative data, to include assessments, reflections, and student work, to inform progress towards achievement of school wide learning goals and instructional practices. • Ensure collaboration with UCLA, both the Pre-K-12 school network and the university, other local school networks and universities, and community partners in order to promote shared learning and student achievement in a real-world context. 2. Supervision and Management: • Contribute to the establishment of the direction for school improvement efforts by monitoring the progress of school performance, student achievement objectives and academic excellence indicators that are aligned to Geffen Academy’s mission and strategic goals. • Create the supportive and positive conditions that enable educators to provide rigorous, authentic, innovative, and personalized experiences for all students. • Provide regular written and oral reports on academic accountability to various stakeholders (i.e. Advisory Council, Leadership Team, Teachers, Parents, and Community Partners). • Model expectations for leaders, teachers, and students on school wide practices for creating a positive learning culture. 3. Coaching and Support: • Contribute to an Educator Observation and Evaluation process that provides regular, actionable feedback so that teachers meet or exceed expectations for high quality instruction while continuing to grow their practice. • Organize professional development that is aligned to organizational goals and responsive to individual needs that include job embedded opportunities for growth and continuous improvement. • Build the capacity of Educators to implement inclusive and trauma-informed practices that meet the needs of all students. • Develop and oversee ‘Educator Improvement Plans’ as part of the Observation and Evaluation process to support the professional growth of educators as needed. • Support Educators as they develop instructional practices aligned with the school’s Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
