Position description

The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing invites applications for the Associate Dean for Academics Affairs at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing. This position reports to the Dean. This is an administrative and faculty position for an INTERNAL candidate. This is not a change in series opportunity.

This incumbent will be a senior senate or federation faculty member in the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing. This role is expected to contribute 70% effort of their faculty role to the responsibility of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, 20% teaching and 10% scholarly and creative work.

Expectations and authority of the role and activities may include, but are not limited to:

Curriculum Planning, Coordination and Oversight:

  • The Associate Dean for Academics will assist Program Directors in providing effective leadership and management of the graduate degree programs.
  • Oversee the Program Directors with program organization, continuous review and analysis, planning, development, and participation in the accreditation process.
  • Meet with Program Directors to coordinate potential curriculum proposals, discuss policy changes, gain input on academic concerns or issues.
  • Along with the Program Directors, the Associate Dean for Academics is also responsible for adherence to the national and state standards and policies and for participating in completion of all required documents.
  • Curriculum Planning and Coordination a. Oversee course scheduling and ensure curriculum coverage and coordination across all programs (PhD, DNP, MEPN, GAUC, certificate programs) b. Ensure timely planning of curriculum to facilitate timeline of other related/downstream processes (scheduling, lecturer and TA hiring, campus database entry, etc.)
  • Faculty Workload Negotiations includes allocating teaching and committee assignments annually for next academic year, work with faculty to alter loads when issues arise (sabbaticals, fellowships, health, family leave, insufficient enrollment, etc.).
  • Be knowledgeable about all relevant educational regulations and ensure that the education of the students is of high caliber and meets all accreditation and regulatory standards.
  • Liaison with other campus units (e.g., Grad Studies, Grad Council) and external to campus (e.g., UC Associate Deans) where needed to advocate for and negotiate policy for our academic programs.
  • Responsible to review and provide initial guidance for all ad-hoc instructional hiring across all programs, with input from Program Directors and Assistant Dean for Education.

Personnel Performance:

  • Partner with Associate Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion on implementing Inclusion Enhancement Plans for faculty as necessary.
  • Lead conversations and create documentation for all faculty personnel performance management.
  • Mediate disputes between students and faculty/instructors that have yielded unsatisfactory student-faculty resolution through proper communication and documented channels.
  • Performance management of faculty, including faculty evaluation and mentoring as appropriate.
  • Performance management of students.
  • Responsible for adjudication of faculty and student appeals.
  • Responsible for faculty Annual Career Plans, in consultation with Associate Dean for Research.

Core Business:

  • Advise the Dean and school on all areas.
  • Input on the academic portions of the School’s budget and recommend strategic investments and resource allocation to meet the academic mission.
  • Review and vet resource requests from faculty and program directors, to then present to the Strategic Investment Advisory Committee as appropriate.
  • Represent SON administration and speak at various events related to programs (new cohort welcome events, graduation, etc.) or events as needed.
  • Represent SON and program-related interests in donor meetings (as requested by the dean).
  • In keeping with the School of Nursing’s commitment to interprofessional education, this position will work with the faculty leadership of the School of Medicine as appropriate.
  • Associate Dean for Academics will work with the faculty and leadership to enhance the graduate degree programs and participate in strategic plans consistent with the overall goals and core attributes of the School of Nursing.

Attend standing meetings of committees and groups (some as ex officio)

  • Leadership Team
  • Strategic Investment Advisory Committee
  • Long Range Planning
  • EPCD Monthly Meeting as Ex Officio
  • Faculty brown bags in conjunction with other SON Associate Deans – depending on topic (e.g., curriculum, question writing, grading)
  • (Other meetings as needed)

As an Academic faculty member, responsibilities include: teaching; professional competence, conducting and producing scholarly work and/or creative work, and University/public service. All responsibilities and associated effort to be further determined based on faculty series.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

• Active and in good standing academic faculty member who has achieved Associate or full Professor rank in the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing.
• Earned a doctorate or terminal degree.
• Current licensed Registered Nurse in the state of California.
• An established record of leadership experience (at minimum 3-5 years).
• Demonstrated use of effective strategic planning to develop a vision, structure, rules, scope(s) of responsibility, resource needs, and practice goals.
• An understanding of rapidly evolving trends in health systems and patient-centered care.
• Knowledge of relevant educational regulations and trends.
• Strong communication skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to the value of diversity, equity and inclusion.
