Assistant Professorship in Communication Studies

The Department of Communication and Arts (DCA), Roskilde University, invites applications for a an assistant professorship in communication studies, to be filled from August 15th 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

DCA is an innovative and interdisciplinary university environment, characterized by diversity with respect to theories, methods and areas of study in research and teaching. The department produces knowledge that contributes to critical research and reflexive practice in relation to development and change in society, including public institutions, private organizations, NGOs, and cultural and media institutions. Responsibilities and tasks

The assistant professor´ work will primarily include research (including publication/academic dissemination) and research-based teaching (including examination and course coordination) at an international level. The assistant professor will be expected to teach both MA and BA levels and across programs. Teaching at Roskilde University involves supervising problem-oriented project work (PPL – read more here) and requires an interdisciplinary approach. The position also entails public dissemination of knowledge, including participation in public debate. The assistant professor will also be expected to complete the educational training programme for assistant professors at RUC.

Candidates are expected to have a strong research interest in the broader field of communication studies, and to have strong competencies within one or more of the following areas:

  • Sociocultural theories and methodologies of communication
  • Audio-visual communication
  • Aesthetic communication

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent within Communication Studies, Cultural Studies or other relevant fields. Applicants must be fluent in English (written and spoken). 

Assessment

In the assessment of the applicant, consideration will be given to:

  • Research topic
  • Academic production and research potential at an international level
  • Documented experience with teaching on university level within one or more of the areas of interest
  • Ability to communicate research and share research-based knowledge
  • Ability to engage in collaboration within DCA and with external partners in relevant practice fields and research networks
  • Other relevant academic experience (e.g. reviewing or editing academic papers and/or organising conferences and/or seminars).

The ideal candidate shall be enterprising, possess good communication skills, and a wish to be visible and involved in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in collaboration across the department, its research and teaching.

Terms of employment

The employment is full time and you will refer to the Dean, Julie Sommerlund

Within a reasonable period of time (max. 2 years), non-Danish-speaking appointees are expected to acquire proficiency in Danish sufficient to be able to interact with colleagues and teach and supervise students.

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

After the deadline for applications the Dean will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.

Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.

The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and - later on - their assessment.

Once the recruitment process is completed, all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.
