The Center for Publishing at the NYU School of Professional Studies (NYU SPS) invites applications for the combined role of a full-time, non-tenure faculty position and Academic Director for the Center’s MS in Publishing degree and Summer Publishing Institute. The position will begin August 2022.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of the Center for Publishing and Applied Liberal Arts, the Academic Director will be responsible for the management and development of the academic curriculum for the Masters in Publishing and the NYU Summer Publishing Institute, oversight and ongoing communication with clinical and adjunct faculty, academic and advising staff, development and implementation of academic policies and procedures,  management of student services and co- and extracurricular programming, and collaborate with the Associate Dean on ongoing communication with the Center for Publishing  Board of Advisors. Faculty appointments are for nine months, with an initial two-year contract that is renewable based on performance. Academic Director appointments are concurrent appointments that run for 11 months and are independently renewable annually based on performance. The rank of the faculty position will depend on experience and qualifications. Full-time faculty are active contributors to the research and pedagogical missions of the School of Professional Studies and are expected to teach three degree courses per semester. This teaching load will be reduced for the Academic Director. In addition to teaching, each full-time faculty member assists with student advising and activities, curriculum planning, applied research, recruiting and mentoring adjunct faculty, and nurturing industry relationships.

The Center for Publishing, which is now celebrating its 25th anniversary at the NYU School of Professional Studies, is devoted to the mission of preparing students for careers in book publishing and digital/magazine media. The Center is at the forefront of publishing education and recognized globally for its innovative, practice-based curriculum, faculty of industry leaders, and deep industry outreach and involvement in terms of internships, events and international student opportunities.

Offering two pathways to publishing, the Center provides students with the opportunity to enroll in a 36-credit graduate degree, the MS in Publishing, or a four-week summer intensive, The NYU Summer Publishing Institute, which provides graduate credit. Students are encouraged to apply to both programs, earning graduate credit during their summer studies and matriculating into the masters program in the fall.  Over the years, thousands of aspiring publishing professionals have commenced careers in publishing and media through their studies at the Center for Publishing.

With a deep commitment to providing a wide range of industry events, conferences, and executive education programs in the US and globally, the Center for Publishing provides accessible publishing education on a global scale. Its renowned NYU Media Talk series explores important topics in publishing and media and is attended by publishing leaders and professionals all over the world.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have experience or evidence of the potential for success in teaching a diverse population of students, including first-generation students, and students from diverse linguistic, cultural, racial, and ethnic groups from around the world.  The Center for Publishing currently has a particular interest in recruiting faculty with backgrounds in publishing, particularly book publishing at a senior level, and administration and oversight of divisions, and programs and events. A master’s degree is required; doctorate or other terminal degree preferred.
