The Department of Communication Science invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in Corporate Communication, starting in February 2022.

Within the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Communication Science offers a Bachelor's and several Master’s degree programmes, while its research is carried out at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR). Teaching in our Communication Science programmes is interdisciplinary and internationally oriented, offering tracks taught in both English and Dutch. As an assistant professor, you will be part of the program group of Corporate Communication.

What are you going to do

Teaching and research of the program group Corporate Communication is focused on studying the communication of organizations from a societal perspective. The emphasis is on the communicative interplay between organizations, (digital) media/journalism and internal and external stakeholders of organizations in issue arenas and public debates. A broad spectrum of organizational issues like artificial intelligence & technology use, remote & multi-locational work, and societal issues like mediatization, legitimacy & visibility, and corporate social sustainability & diversity is studied. These issues are studied by using communication science theories. Organizations include companies in the private sector, but also civil society and public organizations.

The candidate:

  • conducts research on Corporate Communication within the ASCoR research program into the production, content and consequences of corporate communication, including  internal and external stakeholders/audiences;
  • teaches regular modules in the programmes of the Bachelor and Master communication science in Dutch and English. The Master program is taught in English only, the Bachelor program has a Dutch track, next to an English track;
  • organizes teaching in the field of Corporate Communication on different themes within  the program, from first year’s bachelor courses to courses in the master’s track Corporate Communication;
  • supervises and evaluates Bachelor theses, Master theses and internships;
  • participates in committees, groups and projects in the program group Corporate Communication.

What do we require

The candidate:

  • has a PhD in Communication Science or a related program in the Social Sciences;
  • has a broad knowledge of communication science in general;
  • has knowledge of corporate communication with internal and/or external stakeholders/audiences as proved by publications in prominent communication science journals;
  • is an experienced teacher;
  • has a strong empirical-analytical research profile and works on/with communication science theories and methods; e.g. experience with automated content analysis and  computational and digital methods is preferable;
  • is capable of providing a stimulating teaching and research environment and is a good team worker;
  • is proficient in English and Dutch or willing to learn Dutch within two years;
  • has the qualities and plans to apply for competitive grants; demonstrated grant-writing experience is a plus;
  • has a proven network in Communication Science and is an active member of the Communication Science community.

Our offer

The position is a temporary appointment for a term of 1,5 years. For internal candidates the contract will be for the period of 1 year.  If a candidate proves suitable, barring unforeseen organizational developments and assuming sufficient FTE availability, we intend to offer the candidate a permanent employment contract. The gross monthly salary based on full-time employment (38 hours per week) ranges from €3,746 up to a maximum of €5,826. This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year bonus. The starting salary will be based on qualifications, expertise and relevant experience. The profile assistant professor is applicable in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities.

We additionally offer an extensive package of secondary employee benefits, including a generous holiday scheme and year-end bonus of 8.3%.
