Description

The Institute for Studies in Transdisciplinary Engineering Education and Practice (ISTEP) in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (FASE) at the University of Toronto invites applications for up to two full-time teaching stream appointments, specializing in the integration and delivery of communication instruction within the engineering curriculum.

The appointments will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.

While both positions will focus on integrating communication instruction into the engineering curriculum, one will specifically support second language learners, including:

  • Developing and delivering language diagnostics.

  • Providing ongoing curricular language support.

  • Designing co-curricular programs for professional language development.


Qualifications

Applicants must have earned a PhD in engineering, technical communication, or a related area (such as English, Applied Linguistics, Rhetoric, Engineering Education, or Engineering) by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, and must demonstrate excellence in teaching.

Required qualifications:

  • Teaching experience in a degree-granting program (lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and online instruction).

  • Strong foundation in engineering communication theory and pedagogy.

  • Experience integrating written, oral, and visual communication instruction within STEM (especially engineering/engineering design) courses.

  • Demonstrated commitment to pedagogical inquiry and teaching-related scholarly activities.

Preferred/asset qualifications:

  • Experience supporting English professional language development for multilingual learners.

  • Experience teaching graduate-level writing and communication (e.g., proposals, research articles, theses).

  • Experience integrating transdisciplinary competencies (teamwork, leadership, ethics, equity, lifelong learning, CEAB graduate attributes).

  • Experience teaching communication skills to mature technology professionals.

The successful applicant will teach in multiple courses and programs, contributing to the Engineering Communication Program and ISTEP’s mandate to integrate communication across FASE’s core undergraduate curricula.


Evidence of Teaching Excellence

Must be demonstrated through:

  • Teaching accomplishments and awards.

  • Presentations at significant conferences.

  • A strong teaching dossier (statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi, course materials, and teaching evaluations).

  • Strong reference letters.

Applicants must also submit an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) statement, describing their views, experiences, and/or plans to advance EDI in pedagogy, outreach, mentorship, or other professional activities.


About the Faculty & Institute

The Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering (FASE) is internationally recognized for excellence in education and research, with a diverse student population and a strong reputation as a forward-thinking resource for addressing global concerns.

ISTEP is U of T Engineering’s newest extra-departmental unit and the first of its kind in Canada, focusing on teaching and research in education, business and entrepreneurship, leadership, and communication. The successful candidate will also contribute to the Engineering Communication Program, which houses faculty experts in communication pedagogy across engineering disciplines.
