A recognized leader in the field of family business education, Kellogg School's Center for Family Enterprises (KCFE) was established in 1999. KCFE is viewed by family businesses as the “go to” resource for family owner and management executive education, with several hundred participants attending executive education programs every year. KCFE is also a leader in the classroom, with a large global group of MBA students participating in the family enterprise club each year. The Center is active on a global level, hosting its first conference in Hong Kong in November 2018.KCFE’s vision is based on the Kellogg vision – to deliver cutting edge thought leadership that impacts the business community through research and teaching. That includes the following, mutually reinforcing elements:- World-class education: Leadership of high-value executive education programs, MBA, and EMBA offerings integrating Kellogg’s world class faculty with industry practitioners. The Center for Family Enterprises differentiates the Kellogg MBA program from any other.- Global engagement: Engagement with a global family enterprise community of Kellogg alumni, current students, executive education participants, world-class practitioners, and other education partners to make the KCFE the go-to hub on all matters relating to family enterprise, leveraging our existing global campuses to amplify the Center’s influence literally worldwide.- Thought leadership: Further development of world-class knowledge and expertise in governance, leadership, family offices, and other areas critical to family enterprise through rigorous research and in-depth understanding of the field.- Cross-Kellogg/University collaboration: Integration of KCFE expertise and work with a host of other Kellogg and Northwestern faculty across areas—finance, marketing, social impact, law, communications, psychology and others—to inform the discipline of family enterprise more fully, enhance the scholarship and capabilities of Kellogg as a whole, and deliver valuable offerings to family enterprises, students, and other audiences. Within KCFE, a true team approach, including multiple faculty, postdoctoral fellows, doctoral students, and staff contributing expertise in individual areas integrated into a greater, more valuable whole.The RoleThe Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University is seeking candidates for an open-rank clinical faculty position serving as Faculty Director of Kellogg’s Center for Family Enterprises (KCFE). This position integrates teaching leadership, strategic leadership, and thought leadership within the family enterprise curriculum in Kellogg’s degree and executive programs. The Faculty Director of KCFE engages with the global family-enterprise community, inclusive of Kellogg alumni, current students, executive education participants, leading family enterprises, as well as world-leading practitioners in advising family-businesses. The Faculty Director also engages Kellogg and Northwestern faculty across disciplines – finance, marketing, social impact, law, communications, psychology and others – to enhance the scholarship and capabilities of KCFE and to deliver valuable offerings to family enterprises, students, and other audiences. The Faculty Director serves as an advocate for stakeholders in the family business community on campus, locally and globally, demonstrating a true appreciation for and support of the unique attributes of family business.Key ResponsibilitiesThe Director of KCFE, Kate Coughlin, will report to the Faculty Director. Together they set strategy for KCFE and collaborate on key Center priorities. The Director additionally oversees day-to-day administrative responsibilities for the Center.Lead KCFE Activities- Provide strategic leadership and management of the Center, and serve as a public face and communicator, representing KCFE and Kellogg publicly and internally;- Work effectively with Director of KCFE on financial, operational, space, programmatic, communication, and advancement activities, as well as with the leadership of the School; Build on and engage existing network of alumni and community leaders who support and participate in the activities of KCFE.Direct Educational Programming- Lead education efforts, planning and delivering engaging, cutting-edge content at the MBA, EMBA and open enrollment executive education levels;- Demonstrate a strong understanding of the pedagogy, theory, skills and practice of family business, entrepreneurship and other associated fields;- Serve as academic director of executive education programs, including planning, developing and teaching courses in the Executive Education curriculum;- Participate in development of custom programs for businesses and families;- Provide thought leadership and insight and build relationships with other programs, resources and initiatives within Kellogg, as well as local and national organizations that will partner with KCFE to facilitate and nurture the creative, generative, entrepreneurial and innovative development of students.Engage with Stakeholders- Engage actively with student community interested in family business, through the Kellogg Family Enterprise Club as well as informally with students, consistently bringing fresh ideas and perspectives to KCFE;- Working with the KCFE director, maintain and cultivate strong relationships with everyone who engages with the Center including, executive education participants, alumni, and community leaders;- Engage with leading researchers and faculty at other universities to access latest thinking on family business and expand the reach and leadership of the Center.Reporting ToThe Faculty Director will have dual reporting to the Faculty Director, Kellogg Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative and the Senior Associate Dean for Curriculum & Teaching.LocationThe position will be located at the Northwestern University campus in Evanston, Illinois.The ideal candidate will embody many of the following attributes:- Strong experience teaching or consulting in family business or entrepreneurship or a related field, with great “front-of-the-room” presence;- The ability to engage with the global family enterprise community with an in-depth understanding and appreciation of the dynamics of family business;- Presence and gravitas to gain credibility with multiple stakeholders;- A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a complex environment and across multiple constituencies;- Experience as a thought leader who is forward-thinking, on the cutting edge of family business with the ability to convene experts in the field. Research-based thought leadership is a plus;- A PhD in a social science discipline, such as management, psychology, or sociology;- A demonstrated ability to teach, consult, and otherwise engage with an international audience;- Experience in strategic planning and business development;- Experience in curriculum development.Leadership CompetenciesCollaboration and Influencing Skills: The ideal candidate will be articulate, persuasive, and tactful, with a compelling personal presence. The ideal candidate will effectively engage with the broad range of stakeholders touched by KCFE.Strategic Orientation: The ideal candidate will be a global strategic thinker, able to chart the Center’s course in partnership with key partners. S/he will be adept at analytic and complex problem solving, and will be a fearless builder who can shape the destiny of the Center. S/he will have a demonstrated capacity to deal with ambiguity and drive change, to operate with a clear sense of purpose and possess a natural instinct to seek out and tackle the next challenge.Marketplace Insight: The ideal candidate will know the family business marketplace. S/he will draw on deep and sophisticated knowledge of the sector, develop new ideas to reshape the conversation about family enterprise, and create sustainable advantage for the Center.Results Orientation: The ideal candidate will be comfortable driving results in fluid, changing situations. S/he will be a pragmatic tactical operator, able to operationalize strategic plans, and oversee implementation to achieve objectives. S/he will have creative problem-solving abilities and possess a strong drive for action.
