The University of Stavanger (UiS) has about 12,000 students and 1,700 employees. The University of Stavanger Business School carries out research and offers study programs across all areas of business. The study options include bachelor programs in Business Administration, Accounting & Auditing, and Law. The school also offers master programs in Business Administration, Accounting & Auditing, and Executive MBA, as well as research education (PhD). Centre of Innovation Research and Center for Entrepreneurship are both part of the business school. There are currently 80 employees and 1,200 students at the school.

From Januar 1st 2019 the faculty will be organized in three departments; Department of Innovation, Management and Marketing, Department of Accounting and Law and Department of Economics and Finance. The faculty will be matrix organized. The faculty departments will be leaded by the department manager, are responsible for contributing topics and teaching across the various study programs which, in turn, have their own study leader.

PhD research fellowship in marketing and strategy

The University of Stavanger (UiS) invites applications for a PhD research fellowship in marketing and strategy at the UiS Business School, Department for innovation, management and marketing.

The marketing and strategy group at the UiS Business School is committed to excellence in research and teaching. The research-active faculty, with degrees from internationally recognized universities, have published in leading academic journals in marketing and strategy, including the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Marketing Research, the International Journal of Research in Marketing, the Journal of Retailing, and the Strategic Management Journal. The group’s research centers around strategy and strategic marketing, interorganizational relationships, social networks, innovation, development and diffusion of new products, and marketing analytics.

The fellowship will fund a PhD project within the fields of marketing and strategy. The selected candidate will be working with a team of dedicated faculty advisors, and in close contact with the entire business school faculty and a larger group of PhD students.

Applicants should possess strong analytical skills (for example, a background in business, economics, statistics, mathematics, quantitative sociology), a five-year master’s degree with thesis, and a good command of both oral and written English. While the PhD project will accommodate the selected candidate’s research interests and qualifications, we especially encourage application from candidates who want to pursue research in one of the following areas:

  • organization and development of innovation projects
  • commercialization of new products and services
  • governance of temporary organizations
  • social and organizational networks
  • business models dynamics
  • marketing innovation platforms

Applicants must submit a proposal for a possible doctoral project reflecting their research interests.

The PhD fellowship is a trainee position that will give promising research talents an opportunity for academic development leading to a doctoral degree.

The appointment is for three or four years, contingent on 25% teaching/advising obligations. The length of the appointment will be determined during the recruitment process. The position is vacant from August 1st, 2019.

Applicants must have a strong academic background with a five-year master’s degree in a relevant field, preferably acquired recently, or possess corresponding qualifications that could provide a basis for successfully completing a doctorate. Both the grade for the master’s thesis and the weighted average grade of the master’s degree must individually be equivalent to or better than a B grade. Candidates who submit their master’s thesis in spring 2019 are welcome to apply.

In evaluating the applicants, emphasis will be placed on the project proposal, the potential of the research, and personal qualifications to complete the doctorate program. The selected candidate must be able to work independently and as a member of a team, be creative and innovative. The candidate must have a good command of both oral and written English. For candidates with a strong work ethic, who understands that a doctoral degree is a demanding learning process, the research fellowship poses an outstanding opportunity for personal and professional development.

The PhD degree will qualify for research and teaching positions at the university level.

The selected candidate will be based at the University of Stavanger, with the exception of a stay abroad at a recognized research institution.

The salary for the positions is set according to the State Salary Code, l.pl 17.515, code 1017, NOK 449 400 per annum. The position provides for automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which guarantees favorable retirement benefits.
