Professor of Practice in Film and TV Producing


The position will be filled in the field of producing on the basis of professional merits, such as leadership, artistic and business management skills. The successful candidate will be appointed for a fixed 5-year term with the title of Professor of Practice. The position will begin latest in August 2019.


Your role and goals

The Professor of Producing is responsible for the MA studies in Producing and the obligatory courses that the discipline of Producing offers for all MA students of film. We expect the professor to teach many of the courses themselves but we also encourage inviting visiting professionals to share their knowledge on contemporary topics. We emphasise the wellbeing of the students along with efficiency of studies.


The department’s education is mainly focused on drama, creative documentary and animation but newformats such as VR, AR or MR are also explored. The department educates visionary artists for the various professions related to TV and film, providing them with the necessary tools - methods and skills - to realize their films and stories in their own style. Our alumni are well employed and seen yearly among the winners and nominees of the Jussi awards (the Finnish equivalent of the Oscars).


The Professor of Practice professorship is an Aalto University academic position that enables the departments to hire highly qualified professionals and academics who have made major impacts in the fields important to Aalto University. The position also provides possibility for dynamic development of a field.


Your experience and ambitions


We expect the candidate to be familiar with all aspects of producing. Knowledge of relevant European funding and co-producing models are essential, along with leadership and managerial experience. Analytical thinking and teaching experience at university level is valued and interest in research is an asset. Our pedagogical approach is to provide a positive, supportive and ambitious learning environment. We provide the students with an academic education that gives them the skills and knowledge that enable them to pursue their own professional careers in the audiovisual field as creative producers, entrepreneurs, distributors, executives, financers, commissioners etc.


A Masters degree, excellent professional qualifications and significant expertise in professional work, teaching and/or research are required for obtaining a Professor of Practice position. Furthermore, Professors of Practice are required to be committed to developing the field through research/artistic and professional work and teaching activities. A Doctoral degree is considered an advantage but is not a requirement. In the department we are willing to provide our faculty the opportunity to take some artistic leave of absence, in order to keep up their professional career outside of Aalto. This position is a preferably filled as a full-time position but we have the possibility to also discuss other alternatives.


Your network and team


The Department of Film, Television and Scenography (ELO Film School Finland) consists of two degree programmes. The film school was founded in 1959, and it is one of the oldest film schools in Europe and globally. The Degree Programme in Film and Television offers education in seven areas of specialization: Directing, screenwriting, film and television producing, film editing, cinematography, sound design, and documentary filmmaking. The Degree Programme in Design for Theatre, Film and Television offers three areas of specialization: Production Design, Design for Performing Arts and Costume Design.


In addition, the Department offers education in history of film and courses in research skills. The Department endorses practice-based research with questions emerging from experiences in artistic and production work. The research activities aim at producing new theoretical and practical knowledge, insights and approaches to filmmaking and scenography. The Department collaborates closely with the University of the Arts, Helsinki and with other national and international higher education institutions specialized in arts. Aalto Studios offer an excellent infrastructure for audiovisual education and research. A new Aalto Studios building will be opened in 2021.

The Professor of Practice is considered a professorial position with Aalto-level requirements subject also to external evaluation. The departmental recruitment committee will also evaluate the applicants. From amongst the applicants in the first phase, the Departmental recruitment committee will select those who will be asked to take part in a video interview, and supplement their application materials. The most qualified applications will then be submitted for review by external experts, and the applicants will be invited to visit the School of Arts, Design and Architecture on February 27th 2019.
