PhD in Practical Wireless Power Transfer for Massive Mimo towards Very Low Power Nodes KU Leuven, Leuven Department of ESAT - TELEMIC, Telecommunications and Microwaves Belgium

PRACTICAL WIRELESS POWER TRANSFER FOR MASSIVE MIMO TOWARDS VERY LOW POWER NODES

The research group ESAT-TELEMIC focuses on Telecommunications and Microwaves. It covers research on wireless networking, active circuits, and antennas. Currently, the team is focusing strongly on wireless power transfer and Massive MIMO, and this PhD project will be carried out in this context of simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) using Massive MIMO.In this PhD project, the aim is to combine expertise from ESAT-TELEMIC on Massive MIMO, SWIPT, RF and microwaves.

Project

Massive Multiple-input multiple-output transfer (MaMIMO) has been shown to be a viable technology for improving spectrum and energy efficiency of future wireless networks, both using theoretical and measurement-based approaches. In addition, the benefits of Massive MIMO for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) have been established in theory. The challenge is now building a system that is able to achieve efficient wireless power transfer in practice, while relying on realistic channel estimation methods for Massive MIMO. In this PhD, the goal is to achieve practical Massive MIMO SWIPT with limited channel state information overhead. Techniques will rely on simulated as well as measured channel models, and channel feedback strategies.

Profile

The applicant should have a Master Degree in Electronic Engineering and should meet the minimum eligibility criteria for a PhD at KU Leuven, namely having very good grades as well as mature mastering of English, both oral and in writing. The applicant should preferably have a background in wireless communication, performance modelling or optimisation.

Offer

We offer a PhD scholarship up to four years (subject to positive intermediate evaluations). If the applicant is non-EER, also up to 1 year pre-doc will be supported
