NYU Stern School of Business has a dynamic and well recognized course of study focused on sustainability in the Business & Society Program that is growing in all degree programs: undergraduate, graduate and executive.  We are currently recruiting an adjunct faculty member to teach Sustainability for Competitive Advantage, which is the central course for the Sustainability major.

Teaching commences in the Spring Term and the course is semester-long and in-person (January 2023 to May 2023).

Course Description

Sustainability for Competitive Advantage is designed to assist students in developing the knowledge, skills, and perspective they need to understand and address environmental and social challenges in business, so that as leaders they reduce risk, create competitive advantage, and develop innovative services, products, and processes, all while building value for society and protecting the planet.

Course Goals

  • Learn the key environmental and social issues affecting business today and understand the evolution of corporate response—from compliance to engagement to innovation
  • Develop the skills required for leading in this new social and political environment (e.g. materiality, multi-stakeholder management, sustainable supply chains, innovations in sustainable finance)
  • Design an effective embedded sustainability strategy that will deliver competitive advantage

Teaching and Learning Expectations

This is a highly interactive course with multiple activities designed to engage students through discussion, debate and practical applications taken from historical cases and current business challenges. The instructor will combine lectures (based on common readings) with classroom discussions and activities, including guest speakers, to facilitate maximum participation of all students.  Assessment is continuous with a series of small group and individual activities, including consulting projects and presentations. Course materials are well-developed and instructors will receive substantial support.
