Adjunct Instructor for Writing the Film Review

School of Journalism Faculty Los Angeles, California

The Annenberg School of Journalism at the University of Southern California seeks an adjunct instructor, who is a professional film critic, to teach JOUR 430: Writing the Film Review, Spring 2021.

JOUR 430: Writing the Film Review enables students to duplicate as closely as possible the instructor’s life as a daily or weekly newspaper or online critic. Though some sessions may be taken up with guest speakers addressing critical issues, most weeks the class will be assigned a film to review, length running from 600-800 words. The instructor is expected to line edit and respond to these assignments in a timely way. The standard for assessing the writing is that it could be published.

Reviewing is a way of looking at art and encountering the world. It is also a way to learn the art and discipline of the written word. The norms of reviewing are the same across all the arts. Given appropriate knowledge, if you can effectively review one art, you can review others. Therefore, not every student needs to come with a background in film, but they must an interest in the discipline of being a daily or weekly art, entertainment & culture critic. And, conversely, since this multidisciplinary course is a point of connection, its professor must be able to connect students to a broad mix of people, ideas, cultural analysis, literature past and present, and to teach classically  nuanced film journalism practices that are relevant for today.

Requirements for consideration include a B.A., B.S., M.S., or an MA degree in a related field (especially journalism, English, creative or non-fiction writing with an arts or film  specialization.) Previous teaching experience is desirable (three years is ideal). The candidate should have written and published on a consistent basis (for three recent years or more).

Applicants should send a letter describing their background, interests and areas of expertise, along with an up-to-date resume or curriculum vitae through USC’s job site.

The USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism is among the nation’s leading institutions devoted to the study of communication, journalism and public relations.  With an enrollment of 2,400 undergraduate and graduate students, USC Annenberg scholars, both students and faculty, are defining these fields for the 21st century and beyond.
